The Darkness

The Darkness is a horror movie based on spirits and demons of the old ancient Anasazi Indian tribe. The Taylor family takes a vacation to the Grand Canyon for the opening to the movie. Little do they know this vacation is going to change everything about their life. Mikey, their son is autistic and perceives the world in a different light. When his sister, Stephanie, leaves him to stay put while she checks out an overlook, he jumps to a lower level that breaks apart. He falls into a spiritual chamber that holds the stones of ancient demons that bring about “the darkness.”

From here they family head home to which multiple “spooky” things happen. It’s the run of the mill noises, doors opening and closing, faucets turning on and hand prints being left around. As time progresses and the demons get stronger the more intense the altercations and issues become. Until finally they have a large showdown at the end.

My intentions are to keep these as spoiler free as possible. I plan to give a brief overview of the story from what I witnessed and give my thoughts. For my thoughts, it was an average movie. It was pretty predictable at times as you knew where the story was going to go. The CGI in some scenes were ok and others really bad. Most of the acting was done well, the only issue I had was the daughter Stephanie. I know she’s supposed to be playing the moody teenager but it felt off and not genuine. Almost cringe at times. There are scenes throughout the movie that come off cringe as well and almost feel unnecessary. David Mazouz who played Mikey did a fantastic job and was the star of the movie, even with a big name actor tied to the movie (Kevin Bacon). There are attempts at some comedic scenes that do help break the movie up. I feel these scenes helped the movie and a few more spread throughout would have been beneficial. Without spoiling the ending, I thought it was a decent ending. Something similar to what we’ve seen before in these types of movies but executed well.

My overall takeaway is if you are looking for a movie to watch and having a hard time finding one. This can fill the void with being entertaining enough to keep you watching. Is it a repeatable watch, not for me. 2.5 out of 5 stars.
